Do you feel like your tile lacks the luster it once had, turning your Hudson kitchen or bathroom into a dull shadow of its former self? Most likely, the problem is not with your stain-resistant tile, but with the grout that has become dirty. Here at Floor Coverings International Cleveland South, we want our customers’ homes to be as beautiful as possible, so we’ve created this simple guide on how to keep your grout clean.
General Tile Grout Upkeep
Unlike tile, grout is naturally porous, so it tends to absorb dirt and stains more, changing its color and making your room look dirtier. Light colored grout is most popular in kitchens and bathrooms because it accents most tile well and it has a clean, structured finish. Unfortunately, light grout also shows dirt and stains more clearly.
We at Floor Coverings International Cleveland South have found that most grout can be brightened with simple home mixtures that remove the surface dirt and grime and make your grout and tile shine once more. Here are a couple of our favorites:
Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide
Mixing baking soda and hydrogen peroxide is a natural and non-toxic way to clean your grout easily and effectively. Baking soda is mildly abrasive, so it softly buffs away set-in dirt, while hydrogen peroxide is a safer alternative to bleach that whitens and brightens the color of the grout.
Dish washing detergent
For grout that has an especially thick layer of grime, dish soap is a great way to cut through that grime to reveal the grout beneath. We typically recommend the dish soap be used in conjunction with other cleaners, such as baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, because once the grime is gone, there are usually still some residual stains left on the grout.
For these solutions to be effective, it’s important to first clean the surface with hot soap and water to get rid of loose dirt and debris. We then recommend leaving the solution over the grout for ten minutes before scrubbing with a small grout brush or an old toothbrush.
If the above solutions weren’t effective, it is likely you have deep-set stains that will require a more heavy-duty cleaning solution. Commercial solutions can be more effective, but they do have more abrasive qualities which can degrade your grout if used too often. Ask the experts at Floor Coverings International Cleveland South to recommend the best product for your grout needs.
Keep it Lasting Long
Once your grout looks bright and new again, you’ll want to protect it from future stains. We recommend sealing your grout every 2-3 years to prevent lasting stains.
